Silk Stockings - Cyd Charisse 's own voice - It's a Chemical Reaction

I've always wondered what Cyd Charisse's singing voice sounded like. I assumed it was bad, since it was never heard in any of the many musicals she made.

India Adams, Eileen Wilson, Marion Doenges, Vicki Carr, and in this film, Carole Richards, all dubbed her in different pictures.

So I was surprised to finally hear her sing, and she's not that bad, right?

She certainly sings as well here as Hildegard Knef did in the original Broadway production.

No, she's not that bad, and it's not an easy song to handle. The beat is tricky, and trickier still because she makes it a point to stay strictly in character -- a mark of her skill as an actor. Only one note is off, and it's not even a note she can't hit. I had forgotten the song: it's cleverly Cole, and I can't help wondering if he wrote it thinking she might sing it. After all, as much as I love Ethel Merman's performances and her many skills, the number of octaves she commands in her vocal range is not her greatest talent. Porter, if I remember correctly, was especially pleased with Merman's clarity of pronunciation because she put his lyrics across. If the tempo had been a little slower, Charisse might have done the same with this, if she had had the volume with it. (In a recording, I never feel confident about saying whether someone does or doesn't have lung power.)
