Judy Garland - The Harvey Girls - Hayride - Howard Keel - Pagan Love Song

In 1946, "Hayride" was recorded by Judy Garland for "The Harvey Girls" but never filmed. Four years later, however, the melody resurfaced in "Pagan Love Song" sung by Howard Keel. See which version you prefer! (And see if you can guess who plays the native laundress...) .

Sounds too much like a Wizard of Oz melody to me - perhaps L.B. thought so too!

Judy could make any song sound wonderful. However, in this case the lyrics for the version written for "The Harvey Girls" are not as logical as they are for the version in "Pagan Love Song." Who ever heard of "wishing on a load of hay?" At least "House of Singing Bamboo" makes sense within the storyline. Howard Keel and chorus do a fine job with this song. As a footnote, the soundtrack for M-G-M's "Pagan Love Song" was released on M-G-M Records in the 1950s and reissued by M-G-M in the early 1970s but it has never made it to CD. The film is now owned by Turner which is owned by Warner Bros. which also owns Rhino Records, the label on which many M-G-M musical soundtracks have been released on CD.
