Gigi - Leslie Caron 's own voice - Say a Prayer for Me Tonight

Leslie sings this ballad, which was dubbed by Betty Wand in the released film. This track fit in quite easily, so it might have been used during filming.

"The cat reacted violently whenever it was in a scene with Leslie Caron, but director Vincente Minnelli insisted on having that particular cat, so it had to be heavily drugged. This is especially obvious during "Say a Prayer for Me Tonight."

Her voice is much more charming than I expected. Bird-like.

Re: That Piano

All the vocal tracks that you actually hear in "Gigi" (except for Betty Wand's) were recorded in Paris with only Andre Previn accompanying the singers. Later his piano was stripped out and the orchestra was added. Unfortunately, when Leslie's tracks were released on CD, they mixed the piano/vocal tracks down to mono, so I couldn't take piano out when I added the orchestra back in.

Gogi Grant made an album of the songs from the movie in 1960 with Tony Martin. That song gives me chills.
I used to play it endlessly whenever I was getting ready for a date. Desperate bastard that I am.

They really had no reason to dub her and I'm probably the only person on earth who likes something, I don't know what about Betty Wand's and Annette Warren's voices as the two most used MGM doubles. But they really were so hell bent on perfection sometimes they just didn't get when songs had more charm with a non-singer who had an ear for pitch.

But what would you expect from the only studio with such an ego driven music department that they'd pay exorbitant amounts of money for a Broadway show then throw out half the book and 98% of the score and make a film that had nothing to do with the show but for the Title?

*And really that piano. So true. We expect violins and maybe so subdued woodwinds to come out of the air but a strident piano. Would've been one thing if she had one in the room and at least started noodling on it then in true MGM fashion got up as it continued to play. LOL

It is wonderful to hear Leslie's vocals with the orchestra's stereo tracks. Now if only you can get rid of Andre Previn's piano! (I know that's impossible.)
